The Quadratic Formula

Introduction

Another way to find the solutions of a quadratic equation is through the quadratic formula,

\[ x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}. \]

This formula was derived by completing the square of the equation \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\). To use the formula we have to:

  1. Check if the quadratic equation is in the form \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\).
  2. Identify the values of \(a\), \(b\) and \(c\) where \(a\) is the coefficient of the second-degree term, \(b\) is the coefficient of the first-degree term and \(c\) is the constant.
  3. Substitute the identified values into the quadratic formula and solve for \(x\).
